The Municipality of Pictou County is ready to provide affordable wireless internet service through its FirstHome Wireless Service.

Towers have been built across rural Pictou County, giving residents and businesses access high-speed internet at a reasonable cost.

When you contact us about your MOPC FirstHome Service, we will provide you with details about availability, pricing, equipment installations and signal strength.

Frequently Asked Questions for Wireless Internet

What is wireless internet?

Wireless internet involves a signal being sent from the tower to an antenna in your home or business. Here at the MOPC, we use both line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight wireless technologies, which means we can push the signal through some wooded areas.

Is there a tower near me?

You can view our tower map location here. If you’re still unsure, you can sign up here and one of our team will contact you when it is available in your area.

How fast is it?

Speeds start at 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload. Speeds up to 50Mbps down and 10 Mbps up are available depending on eligibility in your area.

What does it cost?

FirstHome 25/5 plan is $49.99 per month (HST extra).

FirstHome 50/10 plan is $79.99 per month (HST extra).

There is no contract and no data cap.  We will test your signal strength as part of the installation process. You must be able to receive 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload speed to be eligible for the service.

Will rates change?

No. Our council is committed to keeping internet prices affordable and there are no plans for rates to increase in the foreseeable future.

Can I change to fibre internet after it comes to my area?

Yes! We want residents to have the service that best meets their needs. If you want to switch to fibre internet once it becomes available in your area, that’s no problem. You can also choose to keep your wireless package instead.
