What is the difference between Wireless and Fibre Service?

The MOPC is committed to providing rural residents with high-speed internet, and this is going to be accomplished in two ways.

Wireless Service - The MOPC has 17 towers, some new, some co-existing with other companies, to provide MOPC residents service. Wireless internet involves a signal being sent from the tower to an antenna in your home or business.  We use both line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight wireless technologies, which means we have the capability of pushing the signal through some wooded areas. Speeds start at 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload.

The Municipality of Pictou County sells this internet service itself rather than leasing its towers to internet service providers.  This allows the cost to remain low. Equipment and installation are being done free of charge. We will also test your signal as part of the installation process to ensure you are receiving 25 Mbps. There can be interference from poor weather, tree foliage or landscapes, which can weaken the signal to your home.

Fibre Service - The MOPC's Fibre service is a line of fibre from a utility pole outside your home to a small box on the outside of your home.  Another small box will be plugged into your home, all free of charge for now.  After this is complete,  the internet service provider you have chosen will supply you with the equipment needed to provide you with the internet. Unlike wireless,  fibre offers consistent speeds up to 1 Gb without any interference from weather or landscapes.

The MOPC is not selling high-speed fibre service directly to residents. Instead, it is leasing its fibre and equipment to internet service providers (North Nova Cable, TNC Wireless and NCS) and these providers will be the companies that provide you internet and bill you for the service.
